The prices are worth it, as you won't ever buy a bad piece of fruit or vegetable here. Sure, I could go to Kroger or Meijer and "save" money, and throw out 1/3 of what I buy because it tastes like crap. Huge variety, fresh produce, and I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the seafood section. Amazingly fresh seafood which I can't find anywhere else in Rochester (ok, maybe Nino's).

I only shop here when I feel like keeping up with the rest of the kardashians, because this place is expensive! It's very nice, but expensive.

I had to undo my top button of my shorts after grazing here yesterday afternoon. I thought Whole Foods was generous with their samples, but you ain't seen nothin' until you've been in a Papa Joe's. This locale is bigger than the Birmingham one. From the second that you walk in you can smell the fresh air aroma of sweet fruits. Or maybe they pump the place with oxygen like the casinos do. Everything is so fresh! I don't know what to start with. The cherry walnut scones are big and moist. Not cake-like; they're the real deal and they are cheaper than somewhere like Starbucks. A four pack is $5.95, but I got them on sale for $4.95. Yay me!! I love the olive bar. Two dozen olives will only run you about $2.50. Paired with a nice Greek cheese, it makes a great tapas for girlfriend get-togethers. Their guacamole (which I didn't buy, but sampled) is to die for!! It is fresh and chunky and a tad spices. Love it!! Same goes for their pecan cookies and their lemon cake and their...the list goes on. Customer service is top-notch too. If you ask about the whereabouts of a product they will walk you there! You have got to check this place out. Come hungry and always remember to use a toothpick! ;-) P.S. Be careful not to use a used toothpick since they put the containers side-by-side.

Papa Joe's is truly the gourmet market of Michigan! I love coming here despite the fact that everything costs an arm and a leg. The store itself is really well laid out, with a great selection of food and other items to choose from. They have a lot of exotic foods, along with in house stuff that they make for sale. Granted, I come here and get random stuff, but I've never been disappointed yet. They have a great prepared foods section, along with beer, wine and produce. I've checked out their meat counter, and it's pretty well stocked every time I'm there. I love coming here as a treat to myself every so often, but the prices limit how much I end up walking out with.

Great store with lots of healthy options! Free snacks everywhere! Expensive but good quality foods and fresh take out for those on the run. I like it.

So much monies can be spent here. That's why we hardly ever come here. However, we DO come here to get some specialty things, like the occasional hard-to-find beer (New Holland Dragon's Milk Bourbon Barrel Stout) and wine. On our most recent visit, we managed to snag a Roasted Habanero Salsa by Frontera. That thing is super spicy, but oh so goooodddd!!! You can either get it here (when it's on sale for 2 for $4), or at WF. Their pastry section looks divine, though everything is priced too high for our liking. Plus, they're not anything super unique that you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere. When you're hungry, it really teases your senses though. Bottom line - come here if you are really into wine and looking for that unique beer, and have fun with the samples. For everyday shopping? I'd go elsewhere.

As Ive stated before I know that comparison breeds contempt, but the Randazzos at 16 & Garfield, blows this place away in price & selection , perhaps I'm spoiled by being an eastsider for 52 years. BUT the prices here are truly HIGH & geographical to cater to there captive audience . After grabbing a cart..visiting the bakery & asking about how much is that glamorous cupcake [ $5.75 ] then glancing at the peaches $3.99 a pound, we left. I'll stick to the farmers market & Rocking Cupcakes for sure!

I used to enjoy going to Papa Joe's to buy fresh veggies, meats and other foods. However, for some reason they decided to attach a cigar bar with a door directly into the market. The smells by the bakery and deli counter are strong enough to overpower the smell of the cigars, but the rest of the store reeks of cigar smoke. Even the cashiers at the checkout counters smelled it. When I'm buying food I don't want to be smelling stinky, disgusting cigars. I won't be shopping there again.

Really fresh produce and tons of samples. Sales are great but non-sale items are pricey. Awesome atmosphere and very helpful people. I love the cheese assortments! If you spend 10$ during the week you get a free loaf of bread from their in house bakery. The multi grain baguette is the best.

Every thing you could want or Dream of wanting to eat. The deli is filled with the most delish pre-cooked entrees, salads, dips and desserts. Paris bakery's, just take a back seat to Papa's beautiful cakes. They cut me a brisket just the size I needed and the fish monger..can I say that...filleted and skinned me ; from a whole Grouper that had just arrived this morning the most wonderful fillet. Skinless, boneless chicken breast were only $1.99/ lb. I loooove Papa Joe's

This place is GREAT!!! really everything your heart desires. They also let you sample, so you don't waste your money if you don't like something. The wine tasting is a great idea, and more places should do this. Even if you don't buy anything it's fun just to browse the store, but I doubt you can get out of there without seeing one thing you can't live without. They also cater so if you are looking to do it up this is the place. We love it and they have our business for life. Thank you Papa Joe's

Classy Store. Papa Joe's is a great place to shop for deli and bakery goods. Their variety and huge sandwhiches are fabulous. Their fruit and vegetables are typically over priced, but it's a good store to wander around in because occasionally they will surprise you with a delicious good deal.

I read the reviews on Yelp about Papa Joes Gourmet Market. I read about the products being superior and how fresh the produce was and how they carry things you can't find anywhere else. I said I have to see this place for myself, but what kept me away is the same constant complaint The Prices The Prices. Finally I broke down and went to go check them out myself. My experience at their Rochester Hills store was amazing. Everywhere you turn are free samples and the service was unlike any other place you shop at. The Prices were no where near as high as I expected considering the complaints. I was astounded from the moment I walked in. The bakery, the prepared food, the fresh produce (not a bad product on display), the wine from all over the world to the IPA's. You just don't find all this amazing stuff under the same roof. Those complaining about the price need to take a good look at what they are paying for. First off its not that expensive and second the old adage is true " You get what you pay for. Try this place for yourself and you decide. Post your opinion.

You don't come here for fruits and vegetables. You come here to drink a glass of wine and to get over priced take out. You feel a little better about getting takeout from a 'grocery store' than a restaurant, and sipping on the glass of wine while looking at fun foreign goods makes the day a little better. The soups and Middle Eastern counter are phenomenal. You can find any cheese ever made in a variety of sizes/prices. Did I mention the wine samples? You can 'sample' an ounce of a $100 bottle of wine before buying for a small fee. The second floor has a row of sample bottles with a nice area to chill and relax while watching shoppers below. They even have delicious small plates. As a sample lover, I give this place an A+. Some days, every row has a different treat to try. If you are in the neighborhood, I would check this place out. However, don't trust the fruits and veggies to be fresh.

Great for catering! They take the hassle out of me having to prepare, cook, set-up... I actually get to enjoy the event with my guests. I use them whenever possible, whether the get together is large or small. I'm always impressed and so are my guests.

My husband and I used to live in DT Rochester and one of my favorite lazy Saturdays was to go wander around at Papa Joe's. I love looking at all of the different counters and ready-made foods that are available. I also really like their peanut butter that is crushed there, just peanuts, no fillers, it reminds me of the peanut paste I used to eat in Japan. Their rack of lamb is quality and my husband and I will get the full beef tenderloin if we are having a big dinner. One of my favorite things to do is to buy their lump crab cakes and shark steak or snapper and make crab cake stuffed fish. It is so impressive and it is so easy, love it. However, the one thing that sets Papa Joe's apart from Holiday/Nino's is the wine tasting. I am able to put some money on my wine card and have 1oz samples of many different red/white wines that I can then purchase. My husband and I love wine, but spending $30+ on a bottle I haven't tried it tough. Then along came Papa Joe's in Rochester! Just a few downsides: Their cheese selection is good, however I think that Holiday Markets is better in addition their cheese staff isn't nearly as knowledgeable. Second, they only carry canned escargot seasonally. Personally I eat it all year long, so seasonally doesn't work for me.

My boyfriend is from Rochester Hills and whenever we come back to visit his family it is a MUST that we stop off here. First of all, the samples upon samples in this place is awesome. I have practically eaten lunch here just off the samples alone. The selection here is always top notch, the produce is fresh, they have a great meat/fish counter as well as a hot food bar. The dessert case when you first walk in, makes my eyes wanna pop out of my head! O-M-G! I LOVE coming to this place. The prices are a little steep, but I personally think its worth it. They also have a great wine selection and upstairs you are able to get a card and sample the different kinds if wine available. The prices are all very reasonable, they have pricey bottles and they have $5.99 bottles, it all depends what you are looking for. The staff is always very helpful and friendly! I wish they had this place in Chicago! :(

My sister just moved to the Ferndale area, and the fam goes out to lunch at Papa Joe's every time we visit. They have a few small tables set up at the front of the store, but the food is so good, I'd be willing to stand and eat! I can't get enough of their soup, and they always have about 5 different varieties fresh and ready to go... not to mention the extensive sandwich/seafood/salad/dessert cases... (drool). You could shop in this store for hours and still not see everything, the selection is that good. I also love the displays that they have outside the store. I went about two weeks ago, and there were mountains of pumpkins, cornstalks, gords, and fresh flowers all outside the entrance. And just when you think it can't get better -- oh, it does! Right next to a display of about a dozen jugs of apple cider on ice was a woman with a small cart, making FRESH DONUTS -- and giving away samples! As the previous post stated, Papa Joe's is definitely not stingy with the samples. The only sort-of downside? It's usually PACKED -- especially on Saturdays. The lines move fast, though, so just be sure you're quick on the sample stands!

I've always been a fan of nice markets, but never lived so close to one as I have for the past few years. Great for the pantry, horrible for the wallet! First, the produce is great. Not as much of a selection as Nino Salvaggio's, but not too far off either. And the guys working in Produce are extremely helpful. They are knowledgeable, and if one of them doesn't know the answer he will be sure to find someone who does. They have a great Fattoush salad, and you can get it with a side of their shwarma chicken. So good! The cheese selection is amazing. St Angel Brie is one of our favorites. They also carry duck confit and various pates in the cheese section. The deli is well stocked, and if there is something you like and they don't have it, they can sometimes get it from the Bham store in 24 hours. People in the meat dept are also really helpful. They carry frozen duck, rabbit, oxtail, and lamb shanks and they will cut up the whole frozen pieces for you at no charge. Anne in the fish department is really nice and will always steer you to the freshest fish rather than the most expensive. And of course, we love the upstairs area where you can drink some wine and relax. Plus they have the $10 and less wine room with some great inexpensive bubbly. All in all, just about my favorite place in Rochester.

Where can you shop and drink wine at the same time??? Papa Joe's Gourmet Market Place in Rochester Hills is the place to go. Just put some money on a Papa Joe's card and you can have wine dispensed as you shop. Yes, this place is pretentious, but OMG it by far is the best market in the Detroit Metropolitan area. It has items in there that you have never seen before. And, once you are finished shopping you can have lunch there. They have a great deli with all kinds of things back there! Presentations of food is wonderful. You can also taste test quite a few of the food, so come hungry. Very pricey, so if you are on a budget you can come and enjoy, but beware of sticker shock! The workers are wonderful and are there to help you

This is like Disney World to a food addict. I was visiting the cider mill nearby and saw this place and stopped in. I have to tell you, I thought I had died and went to heaven. We do not even have anything that remotely resembles this downriver. The fresh food and baked goods had me salivating so badly, that I think they assigned a clerk with a mop to follow me through the store. I found several items I had seen on-line but never in a store like Peter Luger's Old Fashioned Sauce. The biggest discovery for me was trying a sample of DiBruni Brothers Abruzze cheese spread. This was the hottest cheese I have ever tried and I like hot cheese. There is nothing that comes close to the kick this has. It is so powerful that I can only manage less than a tespoonful at a time. I have not been able to find this cheese anywhere else. I have been to alot of gourmet markets, but this is by far the best. Their other location did not seem as good to me. I live quite a distance away but will be making another pilgramage here soon. Clerk, get that mop ready.

Sorry, Papa Joe's, but I was disappointed by my experience. I came for bread and fresh produce, and both were totally sub par. The baguette I picked up was NOT fresh or crusty, just hard, flavorless and clearly mass produced. As far as produce goes, there was very little organic selection, and the rest of the produce was no better or fresher than what I found at the Spartan store across the street. Nicer presentation and more variety, yes, but more expensive, and much of it wasn't even that fresh (the "fresh" loose salad mix was limp and browning). Not at all what I was expecting from such a fancy-pants place! Seems like a place to go for wine, cheese and expensive gourmet pre-made food and snacks -- but with so many other grocery options in the area, I doubt I'll go back.

Papa Joe's is a shopping experience you do not want to miss. If you can't find it here you won't find it. Always fresh produce, meats, seafood, breads, pastries, deli like no other, florist, and carryout ready made gourmet food or ready to cook! Wines galore...you can sample while you shop! My favorite store ever!

Love this place. Drove up from FL to visit family and was able to pick up sandwiches, dips and salads to put together trays of finger food. Fresh and delicious. Grabbed a bottle of wine - that took the most time. Every bottle was something I would drink. (I realize that makes me sound lien I have a problem). :) BUT there is a ton to choose from. Also, you can head upstairs and try some samples of wine. It's a little pricy but it's everything you need in one stop and quality is not sacrificed.

This is a great gourmet store. Service is good too. They definitely have top quality produce and a big selection of cheeses. This is the only place in the area that I know of where I can find Madeira wine. Their cakes in the bakery are really good. Absolutely gourmet cakes. I just recently signed up for the rewards program and I should have done it a long time ago as I am missing a lot of Free bread! Another thing I like here is their king crab legs. It is a little pricey and that is of the reasons Im only giving it a 4 star. They overprice stuff a little bit here.

This place is within walking distance of my work, so from time to time I wander over there to grab something for lunch. Since I don't live close by, it does not make sense for me to grocery shop here, but I suspect it would be a bit pricey if I was aiming to get all of our groceries here. That being said, they have a really fantastic selection of grocery that you don't find at your local Kroger, etc. A huge deli section, lots of cheeses, wines produce, etc. From a lunch standpoint, this place is solid. As I type this I am finishing my lunch of Pasta Fagioli soup and Michigan salad ( some dried cherries and a bunch of other stuff in there, but the only thing I can vouch for that makes it worthy of being named Michigan is probably the cherries). They have a TON of variety if you want to pop in and grab something to eat. Salads, soups, paninis, actual entree's, pizza, etc. There is tons of stuff and all very fresh. You could probably more than make a meal out of the samples they put out. There are so many and all so good. In fact, when I was just there, I was roaming for samples as I walked to the register and while grabbing something from the deli area, someone at the deli asks me if they can help me. Feeling what I can only guess to be a phenomenon I will term "Sample Guilt", I spit out "Uh yeah, do you have smoked gouda cheese?" now, i know even Kroger has it in their little special cheese area, but I have never seen it at the deli counter, so i figure I have just given myself a quick exit. Well of course they end up having it, so before she pulls it out to start slicing I tell her I have to come back after work so it won't be sitting in my car. Thus ends my sampling for the day. Anyways, I guess that last paragraph was a bit superfluous, but either way, Papa Joes has some good eats!

The prices are high but it's a fun experience shopping here - from the peanut butter machine to the wine taster and all the awesome free samples to the great variety of food. Definitely a specialty store and not my normal grocery store but love it for what it is.

I love this market! Great healthy choices, lots of great produce, meats, breads, fruits and veggies!! I also appreciate the pre-made items for when I am on-the-go!

Wow. A lot of people talk about how great the building and the frills are but let's talk about the actual products. They have more expensive produce than anyone else in the city and a fairly unimpressive selection of international and health-food related products. From what I saw it's basically pasta sauce, wine, meat, and overpriced foreign garbage. Pretty much on par with the climate here.

Unfortunately, both times I've been to this location have been on Christmas Eve and the day before Thanksgiving (when it was ridiculously packed) but I'd give it 10 stars if I could. Samples, samples, everywhere! And HELLO -- you can buy a glass of wine to sample before buying a bottle/enjoy while you shop. The store is huge and a bit overwhelming, and would take days to really explore, but that's a challenge I'm willing to take on.

Awesome, awesome place. We happened to just drive by this place and decided to check it out. When we got just inside the main entrance we were already like WOW! Very high ceilings, all kinds of colors and smells abound. My fiance and I both commented that we felt like we should be taking pictures, especially in the area of the store with the incredible array of fruits and vegetables. Very nicely done. It was a bit overwhelming at first, we had to come up with a game plan on how to cover this place! You could easily spend hours here just sampling the foods and yes, I was shocked to see the wine dispensers too in addition to the many other things you can sample there. The second floor is really a mezzanine that overlooks the rest of the store. Up here is a small bar and place to sit where you can sample wine and cheeses. There's also an area with wine books up there to brush up on your wine knowledge and a sectioned off area that has nothing but wines under $10 a bottle. The mezzanine has the very inexpensive wine samples you can buy and drink there as well as a similar but smaller sample station on the main floor. This is the first time I've ever seen a fresh squeeze orange juice machine in a market. Try a sample! It's really good!!! I wish this place was closer to my home. If you are anywhere in metro Detroit I would highly recommend trying it out at least once. Just make sure you have a good 1-2 hours to just roam and look and see how much this store has to offer! I'll certainly be going back!

Today was the first day I'd ever been to Papa Joe's. My mother in the last year has really gotten into trying out new recipes almost daily out of these gourmet magazines. Apparently this is a great market to get oddball stuff at. From the minute we walked in they had me at the dessert counter. I don't know who thought dipping marshmallows in chocolate and covering them in sprinkles would be a fantastic idea, but God bless you kind person ... God bless you. After my mother had pulled my face from the glass and I could hear the cellulite on my ass rejoicing because more would not be joining them we checked out the coffee. After we used their little carcinogen cups to taste test the coffee I actually bought beans for their Breakfast Blend. Nummy nummy nummy. Like any gourmet market you can expect higher prices. In all fairness, they do have some REALLY good sales. The other thing I thought was fantastic was the freebie taste testing. I also found out about the wine sampling. It's like the store knew I would be stuck with my mother for the next hour and they were just helping me deal with it! This might sound very childish, but I knew I found an amazing grocery store when I saw they carried cookies called "Whippets." Oooooh the inappropriate jokes I made with my mom about those for the next hour was worth it. They also were on sale 2/$5.00. Really, how do you not find a cookie called Whippet hilarious? We definitely ended up buying a box of them even though each cookie is 65 calories apiece. All in all I had a great experience checking everything out. I loved their selection. The reason I knocked it one star is because I was unbelievably offended watching one of the managers freak out on one of their employees. Not only was the offense not worth their public humiliation, but if you feel the need to tell them what they did was so awful then pull them aside in a backroom but NOT where the customers can see. I found that very unprofessional.

I love Papa Joe's for many of the reasons Michelle S. just listed... Girl ain't lyin'! And yes, drinking wine while shopping is a great idea b/c they're hoping you just might get drunk enough to buy some of their more overpriced items. LoL! Ok but really, their price does equate to quality. First of all this place knows customer service... starting with the free samples of course, you can find them everywhere! they even have hot samples like mini quiches! Their gourmet pizza's do look good but at $3.49 a slice.... um i'll pass. I love their bakery and their fresh fruit/veggies selection. Their deli is nice too with quality cold cuts and cheeses. The best part is getting a PJ's card so are mailed sweet coupons right to your doorstep. I love getting a free baguette w/ every $5.95 purchase! Oh I also once got a cake for my bf from here and it was SUPERB! I have to admit, there are certain things I would love to go to PJ's for when I want some real quality ingredients, but I'm just a po' college student so you won't find me here too often (unless it's for the samples, jk!) since I can buy most of my everyday groceries at Kroger.

I am so tired of seeing employees being reprimanded in the middle of the store. It is totally unacceptable to belittle people like that. Also, the customer service manager needs an attitude adjustment. I am done with Papa Joe's.

Las Vegas doesn't have anything that even comes close to a Papa Joe's. And man do I miss Papa Joe's! Their produce, bakery, meat/fish, deli, wine selections are all top-notch. My mom and I went here to actually get dinner. We didn't feel like cooking, but we also didn't feel like going to a restaurant. So we walked up and you can pick a meat, starch and veg for like $10 bucks. Perfect! You can pretty much pick anything that you want. And you know that everything is fresh! The selection is superb to anything I have ever seen. (Nino's comes in second place!) The bakery has delicious fresh bread and amazing looking deserts. From which, I have had a good few, and all have tasted delicious. They have two locations: one in Rochester Hills and one in Birmingham. Both are great. Maybe one day Las Vegas will catch up and get a gourmet grocery store that I will love! Until next time Papa Joe's...

Papa Joes is my go to place to have a glass of wine and relax. As much as I love wandering around the main level checking out the goodies and noshing on the free samples, I absolutely adore cozying up in a chair upstairs with a book and a glass of wine. It's like Starbucks plus alcohol and minus little kids screaming about chocolate milk. I love that any snacks I feel like consuming can be paid for right there and the girls working have always been more than accommodating. John in the wine department seems to be a constant presence and is a great help. The only downfall is that for awhile the wine machines seemed to be crashing quite frequently. However, they will uncork any bottle of wine they sell and allow you to take whatever you don't consume there home with you. All in all, Papa Joes is most definitely one of my happy places!

papa joe's is great for so many reasons: free samples! wine stations upstairs and downstairs. drinking wine while shopping is a great idea. dining area. i love to eat lunch here. their gourmet pizzas are excellent. helpful staff (just ask for help) wine classes. inexpensive wine classes with food and of course wine! good sales. i love $8.99/lb crab legs! the only downside to papa joe's is that it can be a bit pricey however if you come here strictly for gourmet items and sales you will feel like you got a bargain!

I remember going to the old Papa Joe's when they were located next Bordine's Nursery on Rochester Rd. Papa Joe's is clearly a very nice place to shop. The layout of their store is easy to navigate and I love their fruit. I like to make fruit salads, edible arrangements, and smoothies. Their fresh variety of fruit lets me do that. I do not like that they moved locations since it is a bit further away from my home and I do not like to travel the distance but I have gone back a few times.

If you are interested in Wine, Papa Joe's Market in Rochester, Michigan offers an extensive choice. Papa Joe's has the best selection and weekly price promotions as well as a discount for purchasing 4 or more bottles. They have a entire room of wines under $10 and a opportunity to try a variety of current choices offered in the Wine Tasting Machine. The most important factor in the selection of a wine is the advice of the Wine Merchant, in this case Sommelier Jon Patrus. He has decades of experience in the wine industry. He can recommend a wine for any occasion or order your special request. The $10 Tuesday Night Wine Tasting is a unique experience. Jon Patrus has arranged for Vintners from France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Argentina, South Africa, California and Michigan to present their wines for tasting and speak about their Wineries & Vineyards. Some of the wines offered are exclusive with Papa Joe's Market and for the special occasion a climate controlled "Reserve Room" with large size bottles and rare wines are available.
